疯狂的芭堤雅将军杜罗夫（米哈伊尔·戈雷沃伊饰）预谋发动第三次世界大战，他在水中制造巨大爆炸，导致附近的美国潜艇舰队遭到袭击。美国海军派出经验丰富但名气不大的潜艇艇长乔·格拉斯（杰拉德·巴特勒 Gerard Butler 饰）率领潜艇小队前去侦查。
