邓巴中尉（凯文·科斯特纳饰）在南北战争中立下大功，政府为了奖励他，给了他选择居住地的特权。邓巴渴望新的生活，于是选择了偏远的西部前哨塞克威克，这里居住着大批苏族印第安人。起初，苏族人对他的到来十分抗拒，当邓巴主动接近、了解他们的生活，并救下一位在苏族长大的白人女孩后，他和苏族人的关系开始升温。他得到了一个印第安人的名字：与狼共舞。邓巴的骑术令他的部落惊叹，他的善良受到众人的称赞，他与白人女孩相恋已久。在一场抵抗外来入侵的战争中，邓巴甚至被封为苏族的民族英雄。然而，马背文化的没落是不可避免的，白人士兵来到这片土地，赶走了苏族人，并抓获了“叛徒”邓巴。这片纯朴的土地慢慢改变了面貌……
